Relaxing 'Off Duty' In 1960's Top photo shows L to R: PC 376'A' (?) Dennis GOLDSMITH, self (PC 271'A' Chris BARKER) and PC 332'A' Ginger SMITH in a local 'A' hostelry..... The next photo was taken on 4th August 1962 outside the Grenadier Public House, in Belgravia. L to R: PC 486'A' Mike RIDER, self and Brian FINCH. We were all posing, well it was a haunt used by many other poseurs, for a young lady called, 'Sarah'. I think her father was a VERY senior RAF Officer at the time!!! |

Relaxing Yet Again! I took this photo of the lads in mid 60's, heavens knows in which 'A' Division tavern - we used so many! And enjoyed those visits!!! From L to R: Back view of P.C.147'A' Mike TORODE (AR), P.C.452'A' John DAVIDSON (AD), Brian FINCH (AD), P.C.386'A' Mike RIDER & P.C.332'A' Ginger SMITH(BP). JD was, when I last saw him in the mid 90's the Licensee of a very smart Surrey pub in Pendleton Road, Redhill. Can't remember name of said pub, but very close to the Surrey Ambulance station there. Brian FINCH, was a real Walter Mitty, well, he was ex Royal Marines! He used to use the Grenadier PH in Belgravia, along with Mike RIDER & yours truly and got up to some antics there which just wouldn't be possible in this day and age! Mike RIDER, ex Royal Military Police, always seemingly involved in bad car crashes (off duty). Was my son's Godfather; haven't seen him (MJBR) since 1966. Ginger SMITH, ex Para, served with him at BP. I think he went onto SPG in its early days. All the above were @ 'AD' in 1960s - sorry can't be more specific as my time was April 1959 - July 1966, mostly @ 'AR' , with 2.5 years @ 'BP' (April 1962 - October 1964). Most of us at one time were in 'AR' Section House, remember those cubicles! I never did get to Ambrosden House, but I was in 'AH' Section House around 1960 time. Although not relevant to former 'AD' chaps, Mike Torode, left the Job after 5 years @ 'AR' and returned to his native Guernsey. He was, when I last saw him a couple of years ago, the Island's Chairman of the Police Committee! Poacher turned Gamekeeper, perhaps? |

PROTECTING THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. The picture (Right) was taken outside 4 Buckingham Place, SW1 ('AR' Sub-division) in 1961. This was the home of Princess Lee Radziwell, Jackie Kennedy's sister. It appeared in the Daily Express on 23rd November 1963, the day after President John Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. The picture shows PC 257 'A' Norman THORNBORROW (L) and self, ( 271 'A' Chris BARKER )(R). Both of us went to serve at 'BP' . 'Civvy' next to Norman is a US Secret Service officer, with a CO Special Branch man next to me! Regards, Chris Barker email: chris@chrisbar.freeserve.co.uk |

Baron Von Richtofen or Ex PC 112 'A'? Alpha Delta Plus, This is John Bailey, Ex PC 112 'A' who served at Cannon Row during the mid 1950s before transferring to the then Bucks Constabulary. He was originally posted to Linslade, near Leighton Buzzard and from there went to the Photography Dept. at the Constabulary Headquarters at Aylesbury. He was one of the photographers at the scene of the Great Train Robbery, almost 40 years ago - 1963 and when Gerry MacArthur - the Man from the Yard wanted a photographer to go up in a plane, John went. This is him, looking somewhat like Baron von Richtofen as he came back from his recconnaissance over Leatherslade Farm and Cheddington. John is now 70 and lives with his wife, Joyce in Aylesbury. Hope to publish his memoirs of life in the Met and beyond early next year (crossed fingers on that!!) Let you know how that develops in due course. Cheers for now, Len Woodley. To view Winston as he is today click on the image July 1969 Winston on duty when the first car to park in the Houses of Parliament in July 1899 made a sentimental return to New Palace Yard on the seventieth anniversary of this event. No underground car park in 1899 or 1969!! The vehicle, which is a 12 horse power Daimler was driven to Parliament originally by Mr Douglas Scott-Montagu and in the photo by his son Lord Montagu of Beaulieu. On the front seat beside him is Margaret Thatcher, then only a back bencher. In the rear seat is Lord Strathcarron and Mr Patrick McNair- Wilson MP. "What Has Happened Here Sir Please" ???? 1966 at SN. Fred , now transferred from Cannon Row, was the area car driver of Seirra 2. I was on beat 16 when a construction worker with a strong Irish accent ran up and told me they had found a huge bomb. I went and had a look and sure enough it was a 500 lb'r I called 999 ( no PR's then) and Fred arrived on the scene. The other PC in the background is Alan Wilmot. We cordoned off the area, called for the bomb squad and waited. The photographer was a young lad whose father was a retired Sgt on 'S' who happened to be on the switchboard at 'SN'. The photographer really wanted the picture, so there we were posing. Ernie (The retired PS) told me if the end was coloured red, to run, if it was green it was a smoke bomb. I gave it a tug and everyone ran across the North Circular and dived into a ditch. Stan Uzzel the Station Officer was not pleased and neither was the bomb squad. They arrived 4 hours later and asked if anyone had touched the bomb, we all looked sheepish (like coppers do when they are caught) and said "No" in unison. We all had a laugh and got some 4 hours on our ARD cards ! Ron. To contact Ron, now living in Canada email: rarnold@attcanada.ca |
